Summer tips – a week in video: Grass seed removal, how to spot fleas and rabbit checks

Watch amazing grass seed removal from nose!

Summer is sending us lots of grass seed cases! We had a dog booked in to our Blackheath Veterinary Surgery that needed a rhinoscopy procedure to retrieve a grass seed stuck up his nose!

The video below is a recording of Ash removing the grass seed using our endoscope! Make sure you check your pets head to toe for grass seeds and take them to the vet if they have any irritation to their nose, ears or feet.

Common signs to look out for are sneezing, rubbing their face, head shaking and constantly licking feet.

Warning flea alert

Here is Felix who visited our Mitcham Veterinary Surgery with a nasty sore on his neck. One of our vets Dane demonstrates how you can check for fleas and what you can do about it.
Remember pets on our VIP healthcare plan have flea meds included on their plan so please order and collect if you’re due. It’s looking like it will be a bad year for fleas so act now…

Summer rabbit tip

It is important to examine a rabbits rear everyday during the summer from May until October or November. This is to check for damp, faecal accumulation and the dreaded fly strike Fly Strike is a horrible condition when maggots eat into a rabbit usually around their rear and can be rapidly fatal. Please check your bunnies rears and any worries then call your vet ASAP.

Other ways to avoid fly strike include medications such as Rear Guard and having a good diet with mostly hay and minimal veggies.
